Now, I don't consider myself a feminist at all. I like it when guys hold open doors for me, take care of me, and act chivalrous towards women in general. I also find the fact that the above link is called the "Good Men Project" a bit disturbing. But I can most certainly agree that shouting to a girl in the middle of the street telling her how nice her ass is, is most definitely not the way to her heart.

When you do that, you're pretty much saying, "hi, I only see you as a piece of meat, so I am going to treat you as such."

Not cool.

I've spent a good majority of my teenage years/young adult life getting these sort of cat-calls. And let me tell you now, it is most certainly not due to the way I dress. I've had this happen to me in the summer, fall, winter, and spring. Whether I am dressed head to toe, or in a pair of short shorts and a tank top, I will be the recipient of this kind of unwanted attention. I don't ask for it, and I most certainly don't want it. Sometimes it's nothing more than a whoop or a holler, a car honk, or a whistle. But sometimes it's something more degrading like "I WANT TO SUCK YOUR P*SSY."

Honestly, I could go on and on about how inappropriate is kind of behavior is to women and the underlying issues that arise with it, but I think this article sums it up quite nicely. As you can see, there's a very clear distinction between going up to a girl, introducing yourself, looking her in the eye, and telling her that she's beautiful...or telling her that you'd like to f*ck her titties.

Don't do that.

This poncho was pretty much the best thing I bought in Peru. It's so cute! And it surprisingly does a really good job at keeping me warm, especially through those nights when we were in hotels with no heater ;_; The best part is, when you sit down, it drapes over your knees, so it looks like you have a blanket on :D

Peru!

Fear not, friends! My lack of recent posting has been a result of me being in Peru :D (actually I wasn't gone for that long so I doubt many of you have noticed...) I also had final exams prior to that, I guess...

But anyway, I really enjoyed this trip. There were many ups and downs, but more ups than downs. I have spent many trips visiting big cities across Europe and Asia, so this time I wanted something a little different. I wanted to get away from the city, to someplace that was completely new to me. Obviously, Peru isn't exactly uncharted territory, but it most certainly satisfied my craving for an adventure.

I'm not going to go on a day-to-day account of what I did/where I was, because that would be stupidly boring to read. But in a nutshell, we flew from Seattle, to Houston, to Lima, then to Cusco. We spent a couple of days in Cusco first, before taking a bus to Ollantaytambo. From there we rode on a train to Aguascalientes, which is a small village/town right near Machu Picchu, which we hiked around for a day. After that, we then made our way back to Cusco, spent another day there, then flew to Lima, spent a half day there, and flew home via Houston. I just came home this morning! Traveling is so exhausting. Writing about traveling is so exhausting.

But wow! It felt like I had stepped onto a different planet, or even time period. Everything was just so different. There were very few things that reminded me of home. No chain stores, no McDonald's, no similar language, landscape, zilch! The lack of familiarity was a bit nerve racking at first, but later became thrilling.  I came here to see something new, and I got exactly what I wanted.

The differing culture was the most fascinating thing of all, as it was nothing like mine. While Lima was more Spanish influenced, Cusco/Aguascalientes/Machu Picchu was definitely more native. I constantly saw people wearing traditional clothing, eating/serving traditional food (including Cuy! Everywhere), and overall preserving the pre-Spanish culture. It was as if the whole place was preserved in time. It definitely felt ancient. Well, it was ancient.

Of course, the highlight of the trip was visiting Machu Picchu. Even though it is a very frequently visited and huge tourist attraction, it still felt...incredibly isolated. I mean, just getting to the place was a long and arduous journey, which took us literally in the middle of nowhere. Looking around the top of the mountain, you can barely see any other sign of civilization. All you see is wilderness. This feeling, paired with the fact that you were thousands of feet up in the mountains and practically touching the sky, made for an incredibly exhilarating, yet haunting experience. No wonder why the Incans chose to live up here.

Another thing that really struck me about Peru was the night sky. Never in my life have I seen so many stars! In Seattle, you can't even see the sky itself half the time, as it is covered with clouds. There's also the gratuitous amounts of light pollution just from being in the city. You hardly see any stars around here. When I first got off of the train in Aguascalientes, I looked up into the sky to take in my surroundings, and my jaw dropped down to the ground. The sky was gorgeous, completely littered with stars. It was a breathtaking sight indeed. Definitely not something you can see in the city.

This trip was like trying out a new dish. You cook the same shit over and over again, and you get sick of it. So you try out a new recipe that your friend recommends to you. You like it. You really like it. You want to re-experience it over and over again. This is what going to South America feels like. I'm definitely coming back for more. Next time, maybe...Iguazu, perhaps? I'm open to suggestions ;)

Anna Karenina...the movie?!

I actually reeeeeally love Russian literature. I've considered learning the language just so I can read all the things in their original text. I've heard so many wonderful things about the language, how poetic and expressive it can be. It's actually voted one of the world's greatest literary languages. Haha, totally nerding out right now.

But anyways, yes! It's coming out November of this year. Starring Keira Knightley and Jude Law. I'm excited, but I also am hoping that they don't ruin it. I like Keira Knightley as an actress though, she does a good job with historical dramas in my humble opinion. 

But guhhh...I actually haven't gotten very far into the book yet. I started it last summer, but then I got way too busy and eventually had to put it in the backburner for a while. Hopefully that won't happen this summer, because what I've read so far I actually quite liked. SO NO SPOILERS.

By the way, I know that this isn't the first Anna Karenina movie ever made. I haven't seen any of the old ones though.

I've decided, that after I quit Gilly Hicks (I'm not seriously planning to anytime soon, but let's face it, I'm not staying here forever), and find another really cool/chill job, I'm going to dye my hair some crazy color. Not completely, but just some highlights, maybe on my bangs or something.

I mean, I'm all for embracing your natural beauty, which is the kind of look that Abercrombie and Fitch looks for in their employees. But honestly, this looks like way too much fun.

My personal style can get pretty flamboyant at times. I like wearing out-there, attention-grabbing outfits. I love turning heads. You may call me an attention whore in that aspect, and you'd probably be right. At Sakura-con, I saw many people with crazy colors in their hair, and honestly, I was extremely envious. Right now, my hair is nothing praise-worthy. I'm in the process of growing it out, and volume-wise it's pretty pathetic. It kinda just does...nothing. It's never been the most interesting part of my look. I kinda want to change that. I mean, I'm still an undergrad, so I'm not really looking into trying to get an uber-serious, professional job anytime soon. You're only young once, right?

I'm particularly leaning towards a lavender, lilac-y color for highlights. I don't have nearly enough purple in my wardrobe. And I'm kind of obsessed with pastels right now.

And just a disclaimer, in case anyone accidentally misinterprets this post. In no way am I insecure about my looks. I know that I am good looking, and I know that I do not need to go to extremities with my hair/makeup/clothing to look good. I merely dress the way I do because it's fun, simple as that. C:
